APRIL 7TH -- 1940'S HAIR STYLING WORKSHOP!!
1940'S HAIR STYLING WORKSHOP WITH RUSTY!!!
Ladies, have you been longing to have your hair look like Betty Grable's, Jean Veloz's, or any of those glamorous gals of the 1940's??? Have you wondered how the heck to do those barrel rolls that you've seen other women sporting? Or what about some other simple '40's styles, such as braids or hair combs? How to wear a snood? How to wear a bandana? Rusty will take you step-by-step through these styles. Each one of you will get to practice these styles on yourself, so that when you get home you will be able to do the styles for the next great swing event in your life (Wednesday, at the Rhythm Club, per chance?!) THIS WEEK'S BIRTHDAYS:
This Wednesday night, the Rhythm Club swings out with several birthdays to celebrate, including our dear friend and student Carol, and the great swing bandleader, Pete Jacobs, the man who leads the incredible Pete Jacob's Wartime Radio Revue Orchestra! (For more info on this great band, check out their website HERE) Make sure to plan to come down to the Rhythm Club and help us celebrate these wonderful friends on their special day!
PERFORMANCE CLASS AND
RUSTY & PETER WOW THE CROWD
Rusty and Peter led off last weeks evening performances with a quick couple of Song-and-Dance numbers. They have been performing these routines all across the country and around the world for several years, and always enjoy bringing them home to the friends and students at the Rhythm Club. Following this, the Lindy By The Sea Performance Class gave a tremendous display of their skills and enthusiasm last week at the Rhythm Club!!! They dazzled everyone with their performance of the new routine to the song "Swingin' On Nothin", and knocked everybody out. All dressed up in their cozy pajamas, they swung brilliantly and recieved a tremendous ovation at the end of the show!
AND WE WELCOME OUR STUDENTS FROM USC!!!
Another fun semester of swing classes on the campus of USC is coming to an end, so Rusty and Peter have decided to give free passes for an admission to the Rhythm Club to each of the students in that class! It's a special way to say thank you for a great ten weeks with them, and hopefully provide some encouragement to get out on the dancefloor and put it all to good use! So everyone keep your eyes peeled this week at the Rhythm Club for some USC-looking dancers and help us make them feel welcome with a dance or two...or three...or four...
So come down this Wednesday night and spend an evening among friends at the Rhythm Club.. We've got some of the best DJ'ed swing music anywhere and a reputation for being the friendliest club in Southern California! Add a 2,800 square foot dancefloor and some pretty powerful air conditioning, loads of parking and a mere $6 cover charge and you've got yourself a terrific evening. And it's open to ALL AGES!!!
SEE YOU THERE!

Each year the Art Deco Society of California (ADSC) presents seven "Art Deco Preservation Awards." Only one of these awards is given to an individual -- and we are so proud that our very own Rusty was this year's individual honoree. For the year 2002, the recipients were:
1. The Fox Theatre, Oakland
and (drum roll, please...)
7. Rusty Frank
The ADSC holds a magnificent Art Deco Ball each year in which four hundred people attend. They dress in vintage formal attire -- men in tails, women in vintage gowns. The site is truly like stepping back in time to the best of the era. Part of the evening's festivities is the presentation of the Preservation Awards. The following speech was made at the Art Deco Ball by Laurie Gordon, founding member of the ADSC, and Rusty's dear friend:
"Ladies and Gentlemen,
For those of you who don't know, Rusty has been "living the lifestyle" of the Art Deco Era since she was six years old! So this is an honor that has truly been a lifetime in the making!!!

THE AMERICAN EXPERIENCE: ZOOT SUIT! -- What an incredible website this is!!! Thanks to Bakersfield Thomas for sending this one along...a beautifully designed and very informative site about the history of the Zoot Suit in Los Angeles in the 1940's. As some of you know, the Zoot Suit was adopted by the Hispanic youths of Los Angeles and its style came to represent a great many things to the people who wore them. Amounting to a political and philosophical statement, the Zoot Suit soon had a mystique all its own. This fabulous website explores the many facets of Zoot Suit culture, including explanations of the popular bands of the day, descriptions of the local dance halls, and even some reminiscences about hairstyles and dancing!!! To see this site, click HERE !
See you soon!
*Wondering what the heck a "gate" is? This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian, Jerry Colonna, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the Bob Hope radio program. It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer or swing music enthusiast).
