GREETINGS GATES*!

PICTURE OF THE WEEK

" While the jitterbugs cheer, Fred finishes his "convention report" by crossing his sister, Betty, lightly over his shoulder. In swing parlance, they "jived."

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

"When I dance, I cannot judge, I cannot hate, I cannot separate myself from life. I can only be joyful and whole, that is why I dance."

Halloween Costume contest!!
Jack and Jill contest and
Jill and Jack contest!!
Win great prizes!!

HALLOWEEN AT THE RHYTHM CLUB!!!

It's that time of year again! Time for our annual Halloween party... this year we're throwing one heck of a party! Check out all the great goings-on:

COSTUME CONTEST! This is your chance to go all-out in your best Halloween costume and have a chance to win our costume contest! Just about anything goes; we just ask that no-one wear a mask, since we want everyone to be able to see while they're dancing. Beyond that...do what you will!

JACK-AND-JILL CONTEST!

This is one of our favorite contests! We have all the leaders stand in one line, and all the followers in another line. Then the leaders rotate an arbitrary number of partners and wind up paired with someone totally at random. They dance with this person for one minute. Then everyone lines up and the process is repeated. We'll do this four times so everyone really gets a chance to dance with lots of people. Then winners are announced based on how well they LEAD and FOLLOW with total strangers!!! This is really our kind of contest, since it places all the emphasis on social dancing skills!!!

JILL-AND-JACK CONTEST!

Here's something different and extra-fun: All the same rules of a jack-and-jill contest apply (see above). But here's the twist: boys follow and girls lead!!! Here's a chance to see some crazy dancing and styling as everyone gets to test out their skills in the "other role"! Make sure to come down and see this one...it's bound to be hysterical!

WIN GREAT PRIZES!

What would crazy contests be without crazy prizes?!?! So we are sparing no expense to purchase the finest, highest-quality prizes money can buy...at a local 99-Cents Only Store!!

AND OUR GUEST JUDGE...

Judging the contests for the evening will be our own beloved Pete Vincent (pictured below as a dashing young man in 1938). We figure since he was around for the original swing era, he'll know what he's looking for in the dance contests, right? And by gosh he's such a terrific guy...

RUSTY AND PETER AND THE MUSICAL TRAGEDY...

As some of you already know, Rusty and Peter lost one of their large cases of CDs, holding about 200 discs representing six years or so of collecting. This happened after a job they did a little while ago where they taught a beginners swing class to a large group and then DJed the rest of the dance. They aren't sure if the CDs were left there, or were possibly taken from the event, or even stolen from Peter's car at some point in the packing and unpacking process.

At any rate, their music selection is now somewhat diminished, and they are working hard to replenish the supply. (Something of an uphill struggle as you can guess...) Thanks for your patience and understanding... By the way, if you happen to have any extra swing CDs that you don't want anymore, Rusty and Peter are gladly accepting donations!!!

And we also wanted to say -- Remember, we're here for YOU at the Rhythm Club; this club is YOUR club. If you have any requests, please come up and let us know...we want to play the music that makes you want to jump out of your seat and dance!!! Also, if there are any songs in particular that you own, which you would like to dance to at The Rhythm Club, please feel free to bring them along and Peter will be more than happy to play them for you. Just be sure to put a little Post-It note on the case with the track number you want played, along with your name...if you ever want to see it again!! We really want to play the music that makes you want to dance...

USC CLASSES GOING GREAT!

Our USC Swing Dance classes gathers around for a group shot...

Our ten-week swing dance series at USC is going great! About 60 students (depending on their midterms and finals schedules) have been attending our classes and what a joy to see them turn into "lindy hoppers". They are really coming along, and last week learned how to do their first official lindy move -- the Lindy Circle. Rah! Rah! If you see any of them at the Rhythm Club, make sure to make them feel welcome!

Fight on for ol' SC!!

RUSTY & PETER SANG AND DANCED AT THE RHYTHM CLUB

Peter joins canary Hilary Alexander for a tune with The Campus Five
October 23, 2002

Last week, your teachers and Rhythm Club hosts once again put on their performance hats. Rusty did a nifty tap routine to "It Don't Mean a Thing..." and Peter joined songstress Hilary Alexander for two tunes along with the Campus Five. Thanks to Jonathan Stout and his excellent organization; The Campus Five is the newest band sensation to hit our swing scene. Congrats to Jonathan, Hilary, and the rest of the "Five"!

* * * * LINK OF THE WEEK * * * *

-- American National Biography Online -- You all may not be aware of this, but your swing teachers, Rusty and Peter, are also writers! Rusty Frank, of course, has written the highly acclaimed "bible" of tap dance books, "TAP! The Greatest Tap Dance Stars and Their Stories 1900-1955". And Peter is an aspiring writer of essays and short stories of diverse types and styles.

But...did you know that Rusty is also a noted contributor of articles for Reference works, both published and online??? That's right, Rusty Frank has written loads of great articles about tap, dancing, jazz, and tap legends for a diverse selection of works. These include:

South Carolina Encyclopedia
Peg Leg Bates

American National Biography - Oxford English Press
Gene Nelson
The Berry Brothers

Encyclopedia Britannica
The Nicholas Brothers
Tap Dance

International Encyclopedia of Dance
Peg Leg Bates
The Berry Brothers
The Four Step Brothers
Gregory Hines
Ann Miller
Donald O'Connor
Eleanor Powell
Shirley Temple

Jazz: The First Century
Tap and Jazz article

Smithsonian Institutes Jazz Oral History Project Interviews
Peg Leg Bates
Jimmy Slyde
Brenda Bufalino
Leonard Reed
Fayard Nicholas
Ardie Bryant
Al Viola
Ralph Burns

WOW!!! What a list!!! And just this week, her most recent contribution, the article on Tap Dance legend Gene Nelson for American National Biography Online, has been released! So we thought we'd honor this by making it the Link of the Week! Check it out and see what a gifted writer your teacher is!

*Wondering what the heck a "gate" is?  This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian, Jerry Colonna, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the Bob Hope radio program.  It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer or swing music enthusiast).

SWING SHIFT RHYTHM CLUB EVENT COMING UP!!!

Here's a note we recieved from our Swing Shift Rhythm Club Coordinator, Jessica Densmore!

If you remember our review of the Pacific Palisades Event of August 10, 2002, we had been asked to extend our stay. They have asked us to come back again.

Please make room on your calendars for a program at
Retirement Home
15441 W. Sunset Bl.
Pacific Palisades, CA 90272

We were originally referred by Natasha, and we hope that she, along with MANY others, will join us again. Time is from 2PM-3PM. Patients, families and personnel joined in and hopefully this will happen again.

The current Activities' Director, Pam, is looking forward to meeting us. The last Activities' Director, Jan, now works in a facility in Santa Monica and will be recruiting us there as well. Details to follow in another invitation.

I will need about 8 leads and 8 follows, and also someone who can be "in charge" of this one. You can learn this in one "easy" lesson and there is a "script" and music you may borrow from me (but PLEASE return with info for a review of the Event).

Contact me
