The Derby: That's were a big part of our swing revival started back in 1998 -- The World Famous Hollywood Derby in Los Feliz. If you haven't been there, you'll definitely want to check it out on one of their Saturday Swing Nights. The historic building is one of the original Derbys, this one dating back to 1929. The Derby-shaped interior roof is exposed for all to delight. There are two rooms in which to dance - the front room where the band is located (and is always packed as the dance floor is eeensy) and the larger back room where most of the dancers tend to hang out. Your gonna find a big mix of dancers here, with loads of beginners -- so go out fishing and bring some new ones into our scene!
If you're looking for something dancing to do on New Years, here's a great choice. They are having Steve Lucky and The Rhumba Bums from San Francisco. From all reports, it's a great New Years there at the Derby!
* Wondering what the heck a "gate"is? This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian, Jerry Colonna, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the Bob Hope radio program. It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer or swing music enthusiast).
JOIN THE SWING SHIFT RHYTHM CLUB TODAY!
Swing Shift Rhythm Club (SSRC) is the volunteer arm of our local swing
dance community. Through the SSRC, we visit senior homes, children
hospitals, and entertain and dance at street fairs. The purpose of the
club is to do some good deeds and promote the fun of swing dancing.
