This Week's Celebrations
If it's your birthday this week, just let us know at the Rhythm Club so you can get your birthday dance!
If you're Level 3 and up, join us on Tuesdays for this month's Featured Class: Spins, Slides, and Cool Moves. If you missed our first week, we invite you to join us this coming Tuesday, as we will be building on more moves each week!
Here's one of our favorite requests: The Artesia Christian Home in Artesia has asked us to dance at their facility. Info is as follows:
When: Saturday, March 20, 2004 from 3PM to 4PM
Where: Artesia Christian Home 11614 E. 183rd St., Artesia, CA 90701
1-562-865-5218 (see Patty Johnson or Nurse on duty)
We will do a scripted program surrounding the music and dancing (the new combination CD player and karaoke machine works well and makes the narration a lot easier to coordinate with the music).
RSVP: Jes LMM)310-372-4821 or email) firstname.lastname@example.org

The purpose of the club is to do some good deeds and promote the fun of swing dancing. Anyone can join the club. The events are varied, and purely volunteer in nature. You'll get a notice through the SSRC Yahoo Group website of upcoming events, and you can chose which one(s) you'd like to attend.

Just a couple years ago, Pete was walking his dogs on a sunny Sunday afternoon. Like in a dream, he heard swing music wafting through the air. Like in a dream, the music of his youth pulled him into the building, and what did he see? Suddenly propelled 60 years back in time, a room full of people Lindy Hopping! What did he see, a Lindy By The Sea class! We got to know Pete that day and invited him to join us at the Rhythm Club. A Wednesday not long after, he showed up at the Rhythm Club and had an experience of his lifetime -- for the first time in 60 years he did the Lindy!
Here's the letter he sent after that dance:
December 14, 2001
I would like to let you know that your dancing with me Wednesday evening (at the Rhythm Club) was one of my finer moments of my life. To once again just dancing with someone that knew the dance, was such a thrill for an old man like me to once again do the lindy. I'm sorry that I left without saying that you and goodbye, but I would have started crying with emotion. Again I want to thank you for your kindness and making an old man happy again. After all, it was over sixty years since the last time I had a partner that could follow me.
Thanks again, dear Rusty.
By the way, wondering how he got his nickname "Mr. 5x5"? It's his favorite song. You know what we'll be playing for his birthday song!
New scrapbooks up from Rusty's Birthday Bash, The Nathalie and Yuval Workshop, Fort MacArthur, and "Swing!". Happy Viewing!
Chuck "Converse" Fan Page: Well, they say there is a page for everything, and they aren't kidding. In searching around for pictures for our Rhythm Club Converse All-Star contest, I found this page -- a fan page for the Converse shoe and the man who made 'em famous Chuck Taylor. This has everything you would ever want to know about the shoe, the man, including movies in which the shoe appear (and what style, who was wearing them, etc.)
* Wondering what the heck a "gate"is? This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian, Jerry Colonna, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the Bob Hope radio program. It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer or swing music enthusiast).
