"I'm singin' and dancin' in the rain"
Gene Kelly, from "Singin' In The Rain"
HALLOWEEN AT THE RHYTHM CLUB TOMORROW NITE
GET YOUR COSTUME OUT AND READY!
DON'T LET THE RAIN STOP YOU!!!!
What can be better than dancing the nite away? I'll tell ya: Dancing the nite away to a full big band -- and we've got it for you tomorrow nite at The Rhythm Cub with The Jonathan Stout Orchestra featuring Hilary Alexander on the vocals. And what could be better than that? Dancing the nite away in costume!
That's right, it's our annual Halloween Costume Bash. We have Mr Scary himself, Maxwell DeMille as our evening's host, and we'll be giving away swell prizes for best costumes. So pull out all the stops. I am constantly amazed at your creativity!
For those of you who are new and wondering if you'll be the only person to wander in the club in costume, have no fear whatsoever, you'll find the swing dance world a game one! We love to dress up. We have over an 80% costume crowd -- no kidding! How about 100% this year!!!
REMEMBER WHAT GENE KELLY SAID...
"I'm singin' and dancin' in the rain..."
Weather forecast -- RAIN. Please, please, please, please, please, please (get the hint) don't let that stop you. The orchestra is booked, the club is booked, please don't let the rain stop you. It's just water. I know it's nice to stay home on a rainy night, but in as much as we've got this swell orchestra lined up for you, please come!
PROFESSIONAL DANCERS SOCIETY FALL BALL
IN A WORD - GOSH!
(see new scrapbooks HERE)
Our Lindy By The Sea Table with Onna White (center)
There were about 16 of us joining 470! at the Professional Dancers Society Fall Ball at the Sportsmans Lodge honoring Betty Garrett and Fayard Nicholas. I've been attending these events for twelve years, but our crowd was totally unprepared for the caliber of the evening. Sally Hoyt couldn't stop smiling, she said she just couldn't believe the evening. When I introduced her to "All In The Family" famed Sally Struthers, Ms Struthers greeted her with a huge smile saying "The two Sallys!".
Sally Struthers and Sally Hoyt!
Augie, our recently returned serviceman, pleased me no end when he walked up to the evening's star and exclaimed, "May I have a hug?!" Betty Garrett, burst out in joyful laughter and flew into his arms. I think it was one of the highlights of her evening!
Three Dancers Three: Rusty Frank, Fayard Nicholas (90!), Augie Freeman
We had two tables at the event. At my table, we had the honor of being joined by renowned choreographer Onna White (look her up on IBDB or IMDB. She loved watching us all dance, and we loved her stories.
Rusty with Onna White -- what a beauty!
This email in from Sal and Jamie, who drove all the way up from San Diego for the event:
Jamie and I wanted to thank you again for inviting us to join you at the PDS ball. We were so excited and speechless throughout most of the night!!! The evening was marvelous!
We enjoyed sitting next to and talking to Onna. She was such a kick! At one moment in my ignorance I asked her "Are there any more choreographers here?" She turned to me with an intense look and says "What do you mean? They're all here! " :^)
After that, she wanted me to dance all the time where she could see me. She remarked, "If only I didn't have this cane I would be dancing out there with you." What nice remarks from a lovely and talented lady!
It was also nice to meet Augie. He seemed like such a nice and fun loving guy. Glad he is back from Iraq safe. And of course meeting Fayard is one of the biggest thrills in my life!!!!
Anyhow thanks a million for a great evening that we will remember for a very long time.
Sal and Jamie
I tried to keep a list of the "old time" celebrities at the event, and here's what I came up with: Red Buttons, Sally Struthers, Onna White, Jane Withers, Mitzi Gaynor, Fayard Nicholas, Jack Carson, Norm Crosby, Miriam Nelson, Budd "Improv" Friedman, Nanette Fabray, Betty Garrett, Michael Kidd... and hundreds of professional dancers from days gone by.
Thanks to all for supporting my "pet" cause. Thanks to you, we donated quite a chunk of change to the organization.
THANKS TO MAXWELL DEMILLE AGAIN!

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 27
Halloween is tomorrow nite! Lay out that swing dancing costume for the Rhythm Club. Each year, we pull out all the stops for our Halloween Party. These year we've got The Jonathan Stout Orchestra (!) for your dancing pleasure. They're busy choosing all their "scary" Halloween swing songs.
And no special evening at the Rhythm Club would be complete without our special Master of Ceremonies -- Mr. Maxwell DeMille!
We'll have our annual costume parade and costume contest. We've heard you actually have a fighting chance, as last year's winner is unable to attend! So, go for it! Rusty already has her costume all picked out.
Remember, when you are choosing your costume, make sure you can DANCE! And SEE!

Movies with musica and dance! Seems like we should organize a Lindy By The Sea outing? Any takers to organize it???? Next Thursday nite???? Early show?
what the heck a "gate"is? This was a phrase popularized by 1940's comedian,
Jerry Colonna, who would holler it out every time he was introduced on the
Bob Hope radio program. It was a friendly salutation to a swing cat (dancer
or swing music enthusiast).
